How Crow Awareness Can Improve the Landscape

How aware are crows? It seems like they can tell different calls apart that to my ears all sound the same. Have you noticed that?

Last night, I knew today would be the Wisconsin cold we calling "f*cking cold" like -30 freezing tears cold.

Yesterday my wife bought dried mealworms for the birds, and I remembered how fast the crows found them last winter.

Sure enough, during our 7AM coffee, I heard a call from the backyard. Then two, three, four, and finally five crows showed up. They’re shy, so we have to be sneaky watching them.

My wife and I talked about past crow encounters. I had a dog, Carlos, who I trained to bark at crows. They learned not to fear him, watching from the trees and even crow-barking back. Since I was always with Carlos, they started recognizing me too. They’d call out when they saw me—even in different parts of town without him.

What have you observed about crow behavior? I’d love to hear about it!
